Posti vans on renewable diesel
Ian Kerr
Finnish postal operator Posti is switching to renewable diesel fuel for its light distribution fleet.
While Posti is already reducing the emissions per parcel by using parcel lockers, the switch to renewable diesel is another step towards emission-free e-commerce logistics. According to Posti, the use of renewable fuels is the fastest way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from e-commerce logistics.
The renewable diesel fuel is made from 100% renewable raw materials, and the manufacturer claims it results in up to 90% less greenhouse gas emissions over the fuel’s life cycle when compared with fossil diesel.
The growth in the number of parcels delivered by Posti has risen sharply in recent years, and millions of parcels have already been delivered weekly during the pandemic.
“Posti and e-retailers have their own roles in building growth on a sustainable basis, but the consumer can also influence through responsible purchasing decisions.” - Arttu Hollmérus , President of Posti's Parcel and E- Commerce business group
By moving to renewable diesel, Posti will reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 3.8 million kilos per year. This equates to the removal of almost 1,300 passenger cars from traffic.
Going for zero
Posti aims to reduce the emissions of its own operations to zero by 2030. Posti is also currently investigating the transition of its transport partner network to alternative fuels.
Customers can offset the emissions generated by their Posti deliveries. Posti has also been introducing electric vehicles and optimising delivery routes in an effort to reduce emissions.
Finland has set a goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035.
