Posti now offers customers the option to offset their parcels’ carbon emissions, in partnership with the non-profit Compensate foundation.
A single domestic parcel is responsible for about 700g of carbon dioxide. Regardless of the size or weight of the parcel, the offsetting cost is EUR €0.05. Posti forwards the compensation in full to Compensate, which uses the funds to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Radically reducing emissions is unambiguously the most important thing we can do, but at the same time, we must also remove carbon dioxide that has already been released in the atmosphere.” - Compensate founder Antero Vartia
So while offsetting is all well and good, it doesn’t address the root cause. Posti has been active on this front, introducing electric vehicles and optimising delivery routes.
It is also rolling out an impressive network of parcel lockers. Posti currently has about 1600 parcel lockers, with a target of 4000 by 2022.
“Online shoppers can reduce their CO2 emissions by up to 70% by routing their parcels along their everyday routes, for example to a parcel locker located at their workplace or the grocery store that they use,” - Kaisa Ilola, the Head of Customer Experience and Channels at Posti.
