The importance of books in Polish post offices
Ian Kerr
Book sales are important to Poczta Polska’s bottom line, with around 3.5 million books sold in Polish post offices in 2019 - an increase of almost 4% on 2018.
The post office carries a range of popular book titles, as well as school texts and supplies.
Books and magazines make up part of the retail offering in Poczta Polska’s post office network. Postcards are also popular. Almost 250,000 postcards were sold from the beginning of May to mid-July this year. Postcards are particularly popular at post offices in resorts and tourist destinations.
This year’s back-to-school range included about 500 products for students, including stationery lines as well as primers, dictionaries, and foreign language guides.
Last year, Poczta Polska customers spent about PLN 425 million on retail products available at the post office. As much as 25% of the company's sales revenue was generated by the sale of books and newspapers.
The availability of publications is of particular importance in small towns and villages, where there is not always a local bookstore, making these product lines a community service as well as contributing revenue to the post.
