The impact of electric delivery vehicles
Ian Kerr
Swiss Post recently published an article about how it services its fleet of electric delivery vehicles. (Original in German.)
Tucked away in this article were some interesting highlights about Swiss Post’s fleet of electric delivery vehicles:
The three-wheelers (the DXP made by Kyburz) are serviced every 5000km or so.
Tyres might require replacing after 500km - driver behaviour has a significant role to play in how long tyres last.
The battery is sufficient for delivery routes of 50-60km.
Vehicles are being kept in use for nine years, instead of the originally predicted seven years.
The electric delivery vehicles are about four times more expensive than their petrol-powered equivalent.
While operating and maintenance costs are lower for the electric three-wheelers, this alone doesn’t make up for the more expensive purchase price. The payload - in this case, being able to carry about three times as much as ICE scooters - allows Swiss Post to reorganise delivery routes for more savings.
Swiss Post says the electric scooters have saved 46,000 tonnes of CO2 since they were first used.
